Why We’ll Never Sell You a Marketing Package

Ask most marketing agencies what they’d recommend for your business, and you’ll get a brochure. Bronze, Silver, Gold. Three tiers, neatly priced, same for the roofer as for the restaurant as for the law firm.

Ask us, and you’ll get a question back: what are you actually trying to grow?

We’ve refused to sell packages since the day we opened, and prospective clients ask us why often enough that it deserves a public answer.

Packages are built backwards

A package starts with what’s convenient for the agency to deliver — X posts, Y ads, Z hours — and works backward to a price. Your goals enter the conversation last, if at all.

Think about what that means. The roofer whose entire business rides on twelve high-value jobs a month and the boutique that needs foot traffic every single day get handed the same plan. One of them is guaranteed to be paying for the wrong things. Usually both are.

And here’s the quiet problem with the tier model: once you’ve bought the Silver package, every conversation with your agency becomes about delivering the package — not about whether the package is working. The deliverable becomes the goal. Your growth becomes a hoped-for side effect.

Same Question, Two Agencies

You say: “I want more customers.” Flip the switch to hear each agency’s answer.

Package Agency Strategy-First Agency

What “strategy first” means in practice

When we say strategy comes first, here’s what actually happens before we recommend spending a dollar:

We learn your market — not “marketing in general,” but your customers, your competitors, your seasonality, your margins. We look at what you’ve tried and what it returned. We figure out where your next customer is genuinely coming from, whether that’s search, streaming TV, digital radio, direct mail, a better website, or some mix nobody would put in a brochure.

Then — and only then — we build a plan around your goals and your budget. Every channel in it has a job. Every dollar can explain itself.

Sometimes that plan is smaller than what you expected to spend. Sometimes we’ll tell you your budget can’t reach your goal, and what it could reach instead. That conversation is uncomfortable exactly once — a lot less uncomfortable than six months of Gold-tier invoices with nothing to show for them.

“But packages make it easy to compare prices”

They make it easy to compare agencies’ prices. They make it impossible to compare outcomes — because a price tag on a bundle of deliverables tells you nothing about whether those deliverables will move your numbers.

Here’s a better comparison to run: ask any agency you’re considering one question. “Walk me through why this recommendation fits my business.” If the answer references your market, your customers, and your goals, you’re talking to a strategist. If the answer is a features list, you’re talking to a sales sheet.

    The bottom line

You don’t need more marketing. You need the right mix — and for most local businesses, that mix goes well beyond a good website. A website makes you credible; advertising makes you found. Digital ads, streaming TV, audio, search — the channels that actively put you in front of your next customer instead of waiting for them to wander in. No pre-built bundle knows what your mix is, because no pre-built bundle has ever heard of your business.

Our time isn’t for sale, our recommendations aren’t pre-printed, and our only real pitch is this: tell us where you’re trying to go, and we’ll tell you honestly what it takes to get there. If a service won’t move your numbers, we’ll tell you to skip it — even when it’s ours.
